For decades, thousands of Charlotte-area residents fueled the vital work of the United Way and the Arts & Science Council. Their generosity manifested itself mostly through campaigns at workplaces. Payroll deduction by payroll deduction, week by week, their donations paid for arts programs and housing and prescription drugs and a thousand other things.
