Community Investment

While fundraising campaigns are typically what comes to mind about United Way, the allocations phase – when the funds are put to use in every corner of our community – is equally critical. We carefully invest your dollars in solutions that improve lives right where you live.

Solutions that get to work right now, as well as those which prevent problems from happening in the future.

As described in the Citizen Review Process, the local nonprofits to which we provide funding are all vetted via strict criteria and a thorough annual evaluation – we allocate money toward specific needs, and we monitor their use so you know that your donation has a measurable and lasting impact, both on an individual level and as a collective whole.

In particular, we focus on three areas that are the fundamental building blocks needed for a good life:

What does all that translate to on an individual level in your neighborhood?

  • It means the young woman who always walks her dog on your street, who lost her job when her employer downsized and now can’t afford to go back to school, will have access to practical job training.

  • It means the elderly gentleman down the block, living on a fixed income, gets free tax help that identifies lesser-known federal tax credits, enabling him to spend more of his limited means right here in our community.

  • It means the teenage boy next door, a latch-key kid with parents whose jobs require them to work late, gets individual attention from a trained mentor who keeps him out of a gang.

In sum, it means your hometown – on a neighborhood level, on a town/city level and on a regional level – is working together to build strong and healthy families and communities.
